Winter is coming! I used to dread the dark nights. Truth be told, I was always more of a summer person, but in 2010, something changed. I moved to Newcastle to be with my (now) wife, and had to travel quite a bit, for work.

As October approached, it suddenly dawned on me that, unless I could make time at the weekend, I was going to have to put my camera away until spring.

A few weeks later, I had another realisation . . . if I learned to take photographs at night, then I could keep enjoying the hobby I loved.

As it turns out, there's a lot to photograph in Newcastle after dark, but I didn't stop there. Next was Durham, and then we moved into the country - so I had to get even more creative with my approach, and get my head around landscape astrophotography.

Then, because it was so different, my work started getting attention on social media. Teaching photography had never been part of my plan, but lots of people asked, and I soon found myself giving up my job and becoming a night photography tutor.

I quickly perfected a method, and adapted it for all kinds of subjects from night cityscapes, to landscape astrophotography, to fireworks, seasonal light displays, and unusual night portrait shoots. I even developed ways of illuminating landscapes with portable studio lighting, to create truly unique images.
