Making Sense of the Night Sky is our most ambitious stargazing course, to date. In around 20 hours of video masterclasses, you'll learn the layout of the summer sky (Jun-Oct), including the constellations and a selection of the best binocular and telescope objects.

You'll learn from our two most experienced tutors, Gary Lintern from Northern England, and Aric Vyhmeister from Colorado.

Summer is a lovely time for stargazing. The weather is better, the nights are warmer, and it's still nice and dark. There's something for everyone, from stunning constellations and stars, to meteor showers, and celestial light shows like the Aurora and noctilucent clouds.

Making Sense of the Night Sky will be your faithful guide to what's visible between now and October, and will give you the knowledge to take your learning right through the year.

We'll show you how to use the most ordinary of binoculars and telescopes to see even further into space. You'll also learn how to use virtual telescopes in other parts of the world, from the comfort of your desktop.

The course is suitable for all ages and ability levels. Even experienced astronomers will benefit from our methods. It's a completely different way of thinking about and enjoying the night sky, which we developed ourselves. It's not available anywhere else.

Getting to Know the Summer Sky

We'll take you on a series of tours of the layout and highlights of the night sky, from June into October.

Learning the Constellations

The constellations are important, and people love to learn them. That's why we dedicate so many lessons to them.

Remote Observing

Did you know you can use powerful telescopes from your home computer, tablet, or smartphone? Some of them are even free. You're going to learn all about them and how to access them on this course.

Identifying and Naming Stars

There's an extra-long lesson dedicated to helping you learn to identify and name the brightest stars in the sky - and how they got their names, as well as their mythological origins.

The Truth About UFOs

Proof that we really do cover everything! You'll get a special guest event we ran a couple of summers ago, in which you'll learn the fact and fiction surrounding UFO sightings, so you can make up your own mind.

Starlore of Other Cultures

The star constellations, as we know them, are only one system. Cultures across the world, and through history have their own, many of which are very different to ours. You'll learn about some of them, and how to observe the night sky as those people have. Whether or not you're travelling abroad this summer, you're going to have a global experience of the night sky.

Binoculars and Telescopes

You're going to learn how to use ordinary binoculars and telescopes, to get a glimpse of other distant worlds and galaxies. We'll show you how and where to find all the best nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. You don't need expensive gear, when you know where to look.

Some people think of stargazing as a solitary pastime. Well, it can be if you like. Sometimes, looking into the expanse of space, alone, can be a very grounding experience - like a kind of meditation or mindfulness practice.

But it's also really nice to have shared experiences with the people closest to you. I've been interested in the stars for as long as I can remember, but I learned to love them all over again when I found out that my wife loved reading about astronomy as a child, but couldn't identify any of the constellations. We've had some lovely shared experiences under the stars.

And, of course, when our son came along, I couldn't wait to share my passion with him too. That took things to another level of enjoyment and life enrichment that I could only have imagined.
